Buying SSL certificates — common questions
What's the difference between DV and EV SSL certificates?
Both encrypt traffic with 2048-bit encryption and display the HTTPS padlock. A domain-validated certificate confirms you control the domain and is issued quickly — the right fit for most small-business sites. An extended-validation certificate involves vetting of your organisation, which suits sites where visitors look for extra reassurance before paying or sharing sensitive details.
Can one SSL certificate cover more than one website?
Yes. Certificates come in versions covering a single website, up to five websites, or unlimited sub-domains of one domain. If you run a main site plus a booking sub-domain and an online shop, one certificate covering the lot is simpler to buy, install and renew than several separate ones. Tell us what you host and we'll point you at the right version.
What's the difference between managed SSL and the one-time SSL setup?
The one-time setup is a single job: we install and configure a certificate on your site correctly, then hand it back. Managed SSL is ongoing: we keep the certificate installed, valid and renewed so it never lapses. If nobody in your business wants to think about certificates again, managed SSL is the buy; if you just need expert installation, choose the one-time service.
What happens when an SSL certificate expires?
Browsers immediately show visitors a security warning instead of your website, which stops most people at the door and dents trust in your brand. Certificates have fixed terms, so renewal isn't optional — diary it, or choose a managed SSL service and the renewal is handled for you.
